Flood waters have entered the barracks of the district jail located near the River Ganga here, prompting authorities to shift around 900 prisoners to other jails, a senior official said on Monday. Four Deputy Superintendents of Police, 20 SHOs, 80 sub inspectors, 146 head constables and 380 constables have been deployed to ensure safe shifting of the inmates. The decision to shift the inmates to other jails has been taken to ensure their safety and health, District Magistrate Bhawani Singh Khangaraut said. There is heavy water logging in jail premises as of now, the DM said, adding low-lying areas have been specially affected. Of the 900 prisoners, 500 are being shifted to Azamgarh Jail and remaining to Ambedkarnagar, Additional District Magistrate, Ballia, Ram Asrey said. He said the jail is near the River Ganga which has been in spate and it is not possible to pump out water as large areas have water. Another senior official said all barracks are submerged in about three feet water.“All the barracks have almost three feet water while the place where the inmates sleep has about one feet water. The sewer and drains are also overflowing,” ASP Sanjay Yadav said. There are a total of 863 inmates in the district jail of which 500, including 44 women, are being shifted to Azamgarh jail and others to Ambedkarnagar jail, Mr. Yadav added. Rains have severely hit life in Baria tehsil area where an ashram in Keharpur village has been submerged while a population of one lakh in about 15 villages is totally affected, SDM Dushyant Kumar Maurya said. A release from the North-Eastern Railway said traffic on the Ballia-Chappra route has been hit after tracks were damaged and repair work was on in full swing. PRO, Mahesh Gupta, said rail tracks were damaged early on Sunday morning and the repair work is going on in full swing. About 20 trains on the Ballia-Chappra route have been cancelled while the route of 20 others has been changed, the PRO added.

World Cup 2019 scenarios: England can be knocked out, Pakistan still in the huntEngland have 8 points from 6 matches now and next face 3 of the most consistent teams in the 2019 Cricket World Cup. They take on Australia on June 25, India on June 30 and New Zealand on July 3advertisement Rohan Sen New DelhiJune 25, 2019UPDATED: June 25, 2019 09:45 IST ICC Cricket World Cup: Pakistan are in the race to make the semi-finals (Reuters Photo)The 2019 Cricket World Cup has truly spiced up. Hosts England were one of the hottest pre-tournament favourites to reach the semi-finals but after shock defeats to Pakistan and Sri Lanka, they find themselves in a bit of a tricky spot.England have 8 points from 6 matches now and next face 3 of the most consistent teams in the 2019 Cricket World Cup. They take on Australia on June 25, India on June 30 and New Zealand on July 3. Not many would have expected England to go down to Pakistan and Sri Lanka the way they did. What would make England fans very uncomfortable is that England do not have great World Cup records against Australia, India and New Zealand. Moreover, Bangladesh’s comfortable victory over Afghanistan on Monday has also opened up the table. The 62-run victory saw Bangladesh surpass Sri Lanka to be placed fifth on the table with 7 points from as many matches with a net run rate of -0.133.India and New Zealand are the only unbeaten teams in the 2019 World Cup so far and should easily sail into the semis. Australia. who lost to India and have 10 points from 6 matches are also comfortably placed.England take on Australia at Lord’s on Tuesday and neither team would want to make any mistakes. This is a crucial juncture of the World Cup and a lot is at stake. Here is a simple scenario that would scare English fans and cheer up Pakistani fans. England can still be knocked out and Pakistan can still reach the semi-finals despite a horror run in the World Cup so far.advertisementPakistan came in for severe criticism from their ex players and fans after a crushing defeat to India. A week later, Pakistan turned up much sharper and eliminated South Africa from the semi-finals race. While England face 3 tough games next, Pakistan will be up against New Zealand, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Of course Pakistan will have to win all 3 while England will need to lose all their 3 remaining matches for this scenario to come true. Here is how the top 4 teams stand in the 2019 World Cup and their remaining matches in the tournament:New Zealand [6 matches, 11 points]: vs Pak (June 26) | vs Aus (June 29) | vs Eng (July 3)Australia [6 matches, 10 points]: vs Eng (June 25) | vs NZ (June 29) | vs SA (July 6)India [5 matches, 9 points]: vs WI (June 27) | vs Eng (June 30) | vs Ban (July 2) | vs SL (July 6)England [6 matches, 8 points]: vs Aus (June 25) | vs India (June 30) | vs NZ (July 3)Meanwhile, Bangladesh have a real chance of making it to the top-four if they win their next two games and hope for England to lose three of their remaining four matches.Sri Lanka also have a real chance of qualifying if they beat South Africa, West Indies and India in their remaining 3 matches. That would take their tally to 12 points. Points Table, Cricket World Cup 2019 (As of June 25)Bangladesh (7 points) – 11 points if they beat (India, Pak)Sri Lanka (6 points) – 12 points if they beat (SA, WI, India)Pakistan (5 points) – 11 points if they beat (NZ, AFG, BAN)The West Indies also have an outside chance of qualifying but for that to happen, they need to win their remaining three matches against India, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan by big margins and then hope for England, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan to lose their games. Only then will they have a mathematical chance of advancing.West Indies (3 points) – 9 points if they beat (IND, SL, AFG)South Africa (3 points) – Out of qualifications raceAfghanistan (0 points) – Out of qualifications raceAlso Read | Bangladesh ride on all-round Shakib Al Hasan to inflict 7th-straight defeat on AfghanistanAlso Read | 5 wickets gave me more pleasure: Shakib Al Hasan after equalling Yuvraj Singh’s World Cup recordAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. 22 May 2009Calling for an end to “old enmities,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Sri Lanka today, days after the Government declared that its military operation against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has ended. “We are here at a defining moment in Sri Lanka’s history,” Mr. Ban said in a statement after touching down on the South Asian island nation. “A long and terrible conflict has come to an end. Now is the time for the nation to unite and build a just and lasting peace.”He expressed his deep concern over the safety and welfare of the at least 300,000 people uprooted by the clashes. “I hope my visit today can help begin a process of national recovery, renewal and reconciliation for all Sri Lankans,” he said. “That is why I am here.”The Secretary-General, who will meet with the country’s President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, and other senior officials tomorrow, said that he seeks to further progress in three areas.Firstly, he said that he hopes that urgent humanitarian needs will be met, stressing the importance of ensuring that the camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) meet minimum standards and that essential supplies, including food and medicine, are available.“I will therefore ask that UN agencies and international humanitarian organizations be given immediate and unhindered access to all areas where there are displaced people,” he said.Another goal is to call on the Government to fast-track the screening and processing of refugees as quickly as possible, Mr. Ban said, underscoring the need for families to be reunited and for people to start rebuilding their lives.Lastly, he said that he “will urge the Government and all elements of society to take powerful and immediate steps to initiate a political process of dialogue, accommodation and reconciliation.”In his statement, the Secretary-General, who hopes to travel to the former conflict zone in the north-east and visit an IDP camp during his two-day visit, highlighted that “Sri Lankans of every ethnic and religious identity must enjoy equal justice, rights and guarantees of security under the law, as President Rajapaksa declared in his recent address to Parliament,” adding that “the world will be watching.”Earlier today, Mr. Ban’s Chief of Staff, Vijay Nambiar, who has been in the country for several days, told reporters in the capital, Colombo, that the national reconciliation process must be “all-inclusive” and address the legitimate aspirations of Tamils and other minorities.“It is important that victory becomes a victory for all Sri Lankans,” he added.Over the past week, Mr. Nambiar has visited camps for internally IDPs in Menik farm in the country’s north as well as taking a helicopter ride over the former conflict area. The official said he also held meetings with Mr. Rajapaksa, other senior officials, diplomats, representatives of humanitarian agencies and political leaders, including Tamil members of Parliament. read more
Flags at all Grand Erie District School Board facilities were flying at half-staff Tuesday following news that a local teacher was one of 18 Canadians killed this weekend in a plane crash in Africa.Since 2005, Dawn Tanner was a teacher at Hagersville Secondary School. Most recently, Tanner was head of special education and was on track to becoming a principal.Earlier in her career, Tanner taught at J.C. Hill Elementary School in Six Nations.“We would like to express our deepest sympathies to Dawn’s family, her friends and everyone connected to this tragic loss,” Kimberly Newhouse, manager of communications and community relations, said in a statement Tuesday on behalf of the Grand Erie board.“At her family’s request, Grand Erie waited until this morning to provide comment on the news of Dawn’s death. When classes resume following March break, counsellors and supports for students and staff impacted by this news will be on site at Hagersville Secondary.“All flags across Grand Erie District School Board will be lowered (Tuesday) in Dawn’s honour.”According to her family, Tanner loved Africa and was a frequent visitor to the continent. She was one of 157 people on an Ethiopian Airlines flight Sunday from the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa to Nairobi, capital of Kenya. The jetliner they were on crashed several minutes after takeoff.Airline crashes involving large loss of life are rare, but this one is especially concerning because this is the second serious crash involving a Boeing 737 Max 8 in recent months.Oct. 29, a Boeing 737 Max 8 belonging to Lion Air crashed into the Java Sea minutes after taking off from Jakarta, Indonesia. All 189 people aboard were killed.Soon after the crash, Boeing issued a bulletin warning that a software problem might cause on-board systems to conclude that the plane was in a stall. As such, there are fears this line of aircraft might automatically pitch itself into a nose dive in an effort to regain momentum, lift and altitude.Several countries and airlines have grounded the Boeing 737 Max 8 until authorities are certain it is safe. As of Tuesday, Canada was monitoring the situation but had taken no action.Tanner’s family shared word of her passing on social media Sunday.“This day will forever haunt my memory,” son Cody French said in a posting on Facebook.“But instead of mourning, I’m choosing to celebrate the life of my mother. My mother was an extraordinary woman who had a positive impact on numerous individuals but none more than my brother and I.“She was the strongest person I have ever known and I adored everything about her. I’ll never forget the memories we shared together.”French noted that this weekend’s tragedy has affected 156 other families. He asked his Facebook friends to keep them in their thoughts as well.“Mom,” French continued, “I can’t begin to explain how much I miss you and how different life will be without your beautiful laugh and your tight hugs. But I just want you to know that both Hunter and I are so proud of you for helping out the vulnerable and for pursuing your dreams.”Tanner’s tragic end was cause for quiet reflection in Hagersville and surrounding area Tuesday.A man entering Hagersville Secondary School would only identify himself as a colleague and a friend because he was not authorized to speak about the matter. However, as he walked into the school he said “She was loved, let’s put it that way.”Tanner had known and instructed the autistic son of Tammy Carr, of Jarvis, since 2015. Tammy Carr said her son doesn’t understand the concept of death but she knows he will feel her absence.“She was up for doing anything possible to assist my son’s education,” Carr said. “She was a wonderful teacher and this is very sad. I will miss her.”MSonnenberg@postmedia.com read more
Believe it or not, your carrier doesn’t make that much money when you buy a phone. All the profit comes from the monthly fees, which lead to all those little $2-5 add-ons the carriers are always pushing. AT&T is apparently planning to roll out yet another monthly subscription service to catch malware on smartphones. You can bet the sales reps in the store will soon be armed with plenty of scary statistics to get users to subscribe.Of course, malware is a concern on Android in a general sort of way. McAfee maintains a database containing thousands of malware signatures for Android devices. Some of these are as simple as malicious apps that steal data, or as severe as exploits that can allow remote access to the phone. This situation has led to a number of mobile antivirus apps becoming popular on Android.AT&T’s Mobile Security product will offer the ability to scan apps as they are installed, but it will also monitor data packets on the network side to look for evidence of malicious activity. This second part is the unique aspect of AT&T’s approach. Security apps in the Play Store only scan data locally on the device. It’s not clear that AT&T will find more malware this way, but it’s sure to put businesses at ease. For this reason, AT&T is targeting Mobile Security to business accounts first. The company plans to make this service available to consumers next year.Google maintains fairly tight control over its Play Store ecosystem. It implemented proactive malware scanning of apps earlier this year, and malicious apps are usually pulled shortly after being posted. The overwhelming majority of Android malware and viruses are circulating around third-party app stores in Asia.Plenty of desktop software companies have done well selling antivirus to consumers, and I wouldn’t expect mobile to be any different. Other carriers will probably follow AT&T’s lead. It’s not clear how much AT&T will charge consumers for this service.via MIT Technology Review read more
Fake news dates back further than a bullying president and Twitter. But the 125-year-old tradition of yellow journalism may have finally met its match.Researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) and the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) developed a new system that uses machine learning to determine if a source is accurate or politically biased.“If a website has published fake news before, there’s a good chance they’ll do it again,” according to MIT postdoc associate Ramy Baly, lead author of a new paper about the program.Fact-checking sites like Politifact and Snopes, diligent as they are, are no longer enough. As CSAIL pointed out, by the time they’ve finished verifying or debunking a matter, it’s probably already been disseminated across the world. So, instead of focusing only on individual claims (as these nonprofits do), CSAIL and QCRI are also targeting news sources themselves.“By automatically scraping data about these sites,” Baly said, “the hope is that our system can help figure out which ones are likely to do it in the first place.”The unnamed platform requires as few as 150 articles to reliably detect if a source can be trusted. This approach, MIT claims, can help “stamp out” fake news outlets before the lies spread.Researchers fed data from Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC)—which relies on human fact checkers to analyze more than 2,000 news sites—into a machine learning algorithm, programmed to classify URLs the same way as MBFC.When given a new Web page, the system identified a high, medium, or low level of factuality with 65 percent accuracy. That number increased by 5 percent when determining whether its content is left-leaning, right-leaning, or moderate. The team’s favored way of detecting fake news and biased reporting was to examine common linguistic features, including sentiment, complexity, and structure.Fake news outlets, for example, are more likely to use hyperbolic, subjective, and emotional text. Left-leaning outlets, meanwhile, often use language related to harm/care and fairness/reciprocity versus loyalty, authority, and sanctity.Unsurprisingly, the system also found correlations with an outlet’s Wikipedia page and the structure of its URLs. (The trick is to avoid those with lots of special characters and complicated subdirectories.)The system is still a work in progress, and even with improved accuracy, it still functions best in conjunction with human fact checkers.“If outlets report differently on a particular topic, a site like Politifact could instantly look at our fake news scores for those outlets to determine how much validity to give to different perspectives,” co-author Preslav Nakov, a senior scientist at QCRI, explained. The Institute plans to launch a mobile app that helps users expand their horizons via a collection of articles spanning the political spectrum.“It’s interesting to think about new ways to present the news to people,” Nakov said. “Tools like this could help people give a bit more thought to issues and explore other perspectives that they might not have otherwise considered.”After helping to spread fake news online, Facebook is doubling down in its efforts to fight it. Real Madrid manager Santiago Solari is refusing to give anything away in regards to their plans for this month’s transfer windowCristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus has had a telling impact on Real this season with the club struggling to compensate for the loss of their star man and his goals. In fact, Real have been outscored by surprise package Sevilla and city rivals Atletico Madrid with 24 goals in 17 games in La Liga, while leaders Barcelona have found the net 48 times in comparison.Making matters worse for the European champions was when it was revealed Ronaldo had ended 2018 as their top scorer, despite having not played for them in seven months. This has led to suggestions that Los Blancos will look for a new striker in this month’s transfer window in order to add some much-needed firepower to the squad.Meanwhile, goalkeeper Keylor Navas and playmaker Isco have both linked with exits from the Santiago Bernabeu due to a lack of game time under Solari. But the Argentine coach refuses to budge when it comes to speaking about Real’s transfer plans.“I have no news to tell you about that,” said Solari, according to FourFourTwo.Match Preview: Barcelona vs Valencia Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Is derby time in La Liga, as Barcelona welcomes Valencia to the Camp Nou Stadium tonight at 21:00 (CET).“What we are interested in is tomorrow’s game, and the start of this year, which we must begin with the maximum humility and commitment. Which we have at the moment.”On Isco and Navas’ futures, Solari said: “I’m not working on any hypotheses. We’re all focused on the game tomorrow.“All those players are part of the squad, I’m not thinking about any other hypothesis.“It’s not my place to talk about transfer strategies. That’s a private matter.“I think they’re all [the squad] pretty happy, ending a year with a [Club World Cup] title has been very important for everyone.“They’re all very happy, what we’re focused on now is starting the year with the humility needed to take on these three competitions we want to try and win.”The 2018 Club World Cup winners will take on Villarreal on Thursday for their first game of the new year in La Liga. read more

Stormy Daniels.Photo: APUS president Donald Trump said Thursday he didn’t know about the $130,000 payment his personal attorney made to Stormy Daniels, issuing a firm denial in his first public comments about the adult-film actress who alleges she had an affair with him.Asked aboard Air Force One whether he knew about the payment, Trump said flatly: “No.”Trump also said he didn’t know why his long time lawyer, Michael Cohen, had made the payment.“You’ll have to ask Michael Cohen. Michael is my attorney. You’ll have to ask Michael,” he said. He added that he didn’t know where Cohen had gotten the money. Trump didn’t answer a question about whether he set up a fund that Cohen could tap.Until now, Trump had avoided questions on Daniels, though the White House has consistently said Trump denies there was a relationship. Still, he has been dogged by the focus on the porn actress, who says she had a sexual encounter with him in 2006 and was paid to keep quiet as part of a nondisclosure agreement she signed days before the 2016 presidential election. Daniels is now seeking to invalidate that agreement. Her attorney, Michael Avenatti said in a statement: “Our case just got that much better. And we very much look forward to testing the truthfulness of Trump’s feigned lack of knowledge concerning the $130k payment as stated on Air Force One.”Avenatti, who has sought to have Trump give sworn testimony, added, “It is one thing to deceive the press and quite another to do so under oath.”He later argued on MSNBC that Trump’s statement could create legal problems, saying: “If the president didn’t know anything about the payment, then he obviously didn’t know anything about the agreement, in which case you can’t have an agreement. And then there is no such thing as an NDA.”Cohen didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday.Daniels, one of several women pursuing potentially damaging legal action against Trump, has kept up the highest profile in the media, helped by a punchy Twitter feed, a widely viewed interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes” and a camera-ready attorney who has become a fixture on cable news.Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has offered to return the $130,000 as she tries to “set the record straight.” She’s said she had sex with Trump once in 2006, and their relationship continued for about a year. Trump married his current wife, Melania, in 2005, and their son Barron was born in 2006.On “60 Minutes,” Daniels described a sexual encounter with Trump that began with her suggesting he should be spanked with a magazine that featured his picture on the cover and then giving him a “couple swats.” She also said she was threatened to keep silent about the relationship while she was out with her young daughter.Daniels argues the nondisclosure agreement is legally invalid because it was only signed by her and Cohen, not by Trump.Cohen has said that he paid the $130,000 out of his pocket and that neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Daniels and he was not reimbursed for the payment. However, Avenatti told “60 Minutes” he has documents showing that Cohen used his Trump Organization email address in setting up the payment and that the nondisclosure agreement was sent by FedEx to Cohen at his Trump Organization office in Trump Tower.Earlier this week, Trump asked a federal judge to order private arbitration in the case. Trump and Cohen filed papers in federal court in Los Angeles asking a judge to rule that the case must be heard by an arbitrator instead of a jury.Avenatti said they would oppose private arbitration, arguing it should be heard by the American public.Avenatti also wants Trump to give sworn testimony in the case, but a federal judge ruled this week that those efforts were premature. If ultimately successful, it would be the first deposition of a sitting president since Bill Clinton had to answer questions in 1998 about his conduct with women.Trump faces a number of allegations about his sexual exploits long before he ran for president.Former Playboy model Karen McDougal recently told CNN that she had an affair with Trump that started in 2006 and ended in 2007. She filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles seeking to invalidate a confidentiality agreement with American Media Inc., the company that owns the supermarket tabloid National Enquirer. It paid her $150,000 during the 2016 presidential election.Trump is also facing a New York defamation lawsuit filed by Summer Zervos, a former contestant on “The Apprentice.” Zervos has accused Trump of unwanted sexual contact in 2007 and sued him after he dismissed the claims as made up.A judge ruled the lawsuit can move forward. read more
NAR Fights For the Homeowner Housing Reform NAR 2017-09-14 Brianna Gilpin The National Association of Realtors’ (NAR) Iona Harrison, Chair of NAR’s Federal Taxation Committee, testified before the Senate Finance Committee Thursday during a hearing entitled “Individual Housing Reform.”Recent proposals for tax reform eliminate benefits such as the state and local tax deduction, which according to the press release, would essentially nullify benefits of the mortgage interest deduction and caps to the MID. Though Realtors have previously warned that doing away with these incentives would raise taxes for millions of middle-class homeowners, critics say the deductions only benefit a small number of wealthy individuals. However, “70 percent of the value of real property tax deductions in 2014 went to taxpayers with incomes less than $200,000; 53 percent of individuals claiming the itemized deduction for real estate taxes in 2014 earned less than $100,000; 32.7 million tax filers claimed a deduction for mortgage interest in 2015; [and] half of taxpayers with mortgages over $500,000 have AGI below $200,000,” according to research conducted for NAR.The last time Congress implemented a major tax reform was in 1986, and it either eliminated or significantly changed a significant number of tax revisions, such as major real estate provisions, to lower rates. However, according to Harrison, in 1991, they increased the rates again.Harrison said despite the voicing of their concerns, Realtors do support tax reform—they just want to bring to Congress’ attention that homeowners already pay 83 percent of all federal income taxes, and reforms raising those taxes would be a failed effort.”NAR supports the goals of simplification and structural improvements for the tax system, and individual tax rates should be as low as possible while still providing for a balanced fiscal policy,” Harrison said. “We simply believe that to achieve these goals, Congress should commit first to doing no harm to the common interest that homeownership provides.”To see the full press release, click here.
