Rabat – An individual in the town of Berrechid, 41.3 km south Casablanca, is suing two gendarmes for physically assaulting him.The man claims that the two gendarmes, while in a moving civilian car, nearly struck another pedestrian. The man reacted by uttering insults and making inappropriate gestures, which prompted the gendarmes to physically assault him. The victim suffered a double fracture in his left leg and a broken nose, according to Al Massae in its 25 January edition.During a court hearing, one of the two defendants did not appear in the Ain Sbaâ Criminal Court. His lawyer justified his absence, saying that he was transferred to the border area near Guerguerat. The judge then decided to postpone the hearing until February 20, while warning the lawyer of the absent gendarm that his client must be present during future hearings or face the penalty of sanction. The victim is being prosecuted for verbal aggression and threats to use physical force. read more
BERLIN — Germany added almost 3 gigawatts of new solar power generation in 2018, about 68 per cent more than the previous year amid a drop in prices for new systems. But the country’s solar industry association, BSW, said Thursday that Germany needs 7.5 GW of new photovoltaic systems annually to meet long-term energy demand.Germany plans to switch off its nuclear plants by 2022 and the government is considering a proposal to stop burning coal for electricity by 2038 at the latest in a bid to curb greenhouse emissions.Europe’s biggest economy depends heavily on reliable electricity supplies. Solar contributed about 8 per cent of Germany’s electricity last year.At 46 GW, Germany has the fourth largest installed solar capacity behind China (174 GW), the United States (63 GW) and Japan (60 GW).The Associated Press read more
With hunger currently afflicting 925 million people worldwide, the European Professional Football Leagues event will give the scourge the red card in support of ‘The 1billionhungry project,’ a global outreach initiative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).The campaign’s symbol is blowing yellow whistles, signifying that it is time to stop the widespread suffering caused by chronic hunger. To date, more 1.5 million people have signed the petition, FAO said in a news release today. The inclusion of the Russian football federation makes this year’s Match Day Against Hunger a truly pan-European event. In Spain, all players, including Uruguayan World Cup Golden Ball winner Diego Forlan, Spanish World Champion Iker Casillas and Argentine striker Lionel Messi, will enter the stadiums wearing T-shirts bearing the symbol of the campaign and blowing yellow whistles. In Italy, all team captains and referees will wear the yellow whistle. At matches played in Netherlands as well as at the Bayern Muenchen versus Hamburg game in Germany, a ball will be signed by all the players and the referee will blow the yellow whistle at kick-off and during the game. The event is just the latest collaboration between multiple sports organizations and individual teams and players and various UN agencies to promote their humanitarian agendas. 19 October 2010Blowing yellow whistles, European football players, coaches and referees at 292 professional clubs will this weekend urge millions of fans filling 146 stadiums to sign a United Nations petition to pressure governments into giving top priority to eliminating world hunger. read more

Junior Tanner Tully (16) winds up a pitch during OSU’s 12-1 win over Hofstra on March 18 at Bill Davis Stadium.Credit: Giustino Bovenzi | Lantern reporterThe Ohio State baseball team (12-6-1) has won five straight games and is undefeated at home (4-0). Those marks will be put to the test over the weekend, as it is slated to begin the conference season with Big Ten foe Northwestern (5-16) set to visit Columbus from Friday through Sunday. The Buckeyes are fresh off an 11-6 victory over the Xavier Musketeers last Tuesday in which OSU collected 13 hits, including two home runs, and won the game in comeback fashion. The Scarlet and Gray’s bats have been one of the primary reasons for the team’s success, with five players hitting .300 or better. A concerted effort to clean up the mistakes in the infield has also impacted the outcome in the win/loss column. OSU has been led at the plate by senior co-captain Nick Sergakis and junior left fielder Ronnie Dawson. Sergakis leads the team with a .410 batting average, and Dawson leads the way with 22 RBIs while batting .313. OSU hopes to get another one of its biggest bats back in the lineup this weekend. Redshirt junior Jacob Bosiokovic has been hampered by a lingering hamstring injury that has kept him out of action for nearly two weeks. After the win against Xavier, OSU coach Greg Beals said he is taking the slow approach with Bosiokovic, opting to not rush the Delaware, Ohio, product back too soon. “(Bosiokovic) is progressing very, very well,” Beals said. “He pulled the hamstring pretty good. He’s been down and needs to be down. He did take a full pregame routine (before the Xavier game). So we think he’s really, really close.”Scouting NorthwesternNorthwestern is entering this series on a decline, having lost 12 of 13 games after starting the season at 4-3. The Wildcats pitching staff has been struggling lately, allowing 7.3 runs per game over the last six contests. As a team, its overall ERA stands at 6.27 on the season, which is almost three runs higher than that of OSU (3.60). The Wildcats do present a formidable test for OSU’s pitching staff, as junior outfielder Matt Hopfner is batting a red-hot .390 in 20 starts. Northwestern, however, isn’t a team that poses an immediate threat via the long ball. As a team, Northwestern only has four home runs all year, three of which were hit by junior outfielder Joe Hoscheit, but OSU redshirt sophomore Adam Niemeyer said he knows this is a team that can string together a few base hits.“I remember over the past couple years, they were a scrappy team,” Niemeyer said. “They always put the ball in play.”Tully leading the charge on the moundLike the weather in Ohio, the Buckeyes’ pitching staff has been heating up as of late. During the three-game series against Hofstra, OSU’s pitchers only allowed four runs. The stellar pitching was sparked by the quiet leadership of junior lefty Tanner Tully. In his previous start, the Elkhart, Indiana, native threw six scoreless innings to improve his record to 3-1. Tully for the season has the team’s best ERA among starters with a 2.73 mark. Tully is also tied with Niemeyer for the team lead in strikeouts with 27. Niemeyer said a big key to the staff’s recent success has been issuing fewer walks to opposing hitters.“That’s one of the things (assistant coach Mike) Stafford and coach Beals stress is just getting ahead of hitters,” Niemeyer said. “You don’t want to give free bases. You need to make the hitters beat you. They’re trying to hit a round ball with a round bat, so if you attack them and get ahead in the count, you will be a lot better off.”The OSU bullpen is also performing to the liking of the Buckeye faithful. Several key relievers have been stepping up week after week. In the game against Xavier, starting pitcher Ryan Feltner was roughed up, allowing 10 hits over his 4.1 innings of work and pitting OSU in a 5-0 hole to climb out of. But OSU’s bullpen rose to the challenge, holding the Musketeers to no runs over the final 4.2 innings. The large part of that control and comeback came from the arm of redshirt sophomore Austin Woodby, who threw 2.0 scoreless innings of work, picking up the win for his efforts and boosting his record to 3-1. Closer Yianni Pavlopoulos has also performed above expectations. The redshirt sophomore has yet to allow a run this season in his nine appearances, which has allowed him to pick up a team-leading five saves for the Buckeyes. Continuing the streakOSU’s winning streak and undefeated home start will be on the line this weekend, and maintaining the momentum it has built up is something senior shortstop Craig Nennig said will be very important looking ahead. “We’re definitely fired up for it,” Nennig said. “We’re going to have a good practice (Thursday) and take care of business with what we need to do for (Friday).”The first pitch against Northwestern on Friday is set to be thrown out at 6:35 p.m. Saturday’s game is scheduled to begin at 3:05 p.m., and Sunday’s start is slated for noon. Beals announced the starters for the games will be Tully, Niemeyer and senior John Havird, respectively. read more

There is a lot of focus on battery technology at the moment, and with good reason. Our gadgets continue to get thinner while we demand more time between charges. We also have to consider electric vehicles becoming more popular and eventually replacing conventional vehicles on our roads. They require much larger batteries which output more power while remaining as light as possible.NEC has been focusing on improving electric vehicle batteries recently and has now managed to increase the capacity of high voltage, long life manganese lithium-ion batteries by 30% using a new cathode and anode design. The Japanese company achieved this by partly replacing the lithium manganese oxide with nickel in the cathodes and then combining them with graphite anodes to offer an output voltage of 4.5V. Typical car batteries today only achieve 3.8V.A fluorinated solvent was also required to stop the new electrode from decomposing the polycarbonate-based electrolyte quickly. Once added, NEC was able to achieve a recharge cycle of 500 charges while retaining 80% capacity in the battery. As this is only a prototype battery the number of cycles is sure to be improved upon before they reach production. As for the increase in energy density, a typical electric vehicle lithium-ion battery today achieves 150Wh/kg, where as this new version achieves 200Wh/kg. That means the next generation of electric vehicles will be able to travel more miles between charges either by using these new batteries at an equivalent size to existing ones, or matching capacity and being smaller meaning less weight in the vehicle.NEC is demonstrating the new battery technology at the PRIME 2012 conference being held this week in Hawaii. It’s unclear when the company expects to bring new batteries to market, but hopefully we’ll be seeing them used at some point next year.More at NEC, via Tech-On! read more

Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article THIRTEEN DIRECTORS, MANAGERS and staff have been sentenced in relation to the abuse of vulnerable residents at two care homes in Devon. In 2010 and 2011, residents were repeatedly and systematically detained in seclusion rooms which had no heating or toilet facilities, and little or no furniture, sometimes for several hours at a time or even overnight.Atlas Project Team Limited ran the Veilstone and Gatooma homes in Holsworthy, providing care for residents with significant learning disabilities.Prosecutors and police analysed thousands of incident records and interviews with former members of staff, and established a pattern that showed staff had used excessive and inappropriate seclusion as a result of their training. The Crown Prosecutors Service (CPS) then authorise charges against four directors of Atlas, who gave this training, along with the staff who were directly involved in the abuse. One of the directors, Jolyon Marshall, was also convicted of perverting the course of justice. Marshall encouraged one of the residents of Veilstone to run away and, along with two of his staff, made a false complaint of criminal damage against the man so as to have him arrested and removed from the home.He has been sentenced to ten months imprisonment for Conspiracy to Falsely Imprison and to eight months consecutive for Perverting the Course of Justice (which was increased from 18 months to 28 months by the Court of Appeal last December). His wife Rachel has been sentenced to eight months imprisonment, suspended for two years for Conspiracy to Falsely Imprison.Today at Bristol Crown Court, reporting restrictions were lifted, following a series of four trials.Huw Rogers of the CPS said: “The directors and managers at the Atlas care homes created a culture of abuse – unlawfully detaining residents in very poor conditions for long periods of time. This case has been ground-breaking in that the directors and managers of the homes and not just the staff that implemented their policies have been held to account.Read: Investigation launched into allegations of serious abuse at centre for those with intellectual disabilitiesRead: ‘Sometimes they shout at you; I don’t like it, I shout back’: People in care on what they need Image: Rod Minchin/PA Images Share116 Tweet Email2 Jolyon Marshall (left) and his wife Rachel, who are among thirteen directors, managers and staff at two care homes to have been convicted today. The U.S. Forest Service moved forward Thursday with plans to transition to second-growth harvest on the Tongass National Forest within 16 years. The draft record of decision represents a compromise that won’t leave anyone completely happy.Download AudioA Tongass National Forest clearcut is shown in this 2014 aerial view. (Photo by Ed Schoenfeld, CoastAlaska News)Tongass Forest Supervisor Earl Stewart has chosen Alternative 5 for the proposed Tongass Land Management Plan amendment. What does that mean? Well, there’s a lot of detail in the draft Record of Decision, but the main point is that during the transition, the U.S. Forest Service will offer an average of 46 million board feet of timber on the Tongass National Forest per year. For the first decade, that will include more old-growth logging than second growth – almost three times as much. But then from years 11-15, the ratio will flip, allowing more young growth harvest and limiting old growth.By year 16, timber stands offered for logging will be almost 100-percent young growth, with a few micro-sales of old growth for specialty products.Concurrent with Stewart’s announcement was a flurry of news releases from various groups. Trout Unlimited Alaska likes the decision, because it protects more salmon streams; but various conservation groups are unhappy, and say that the transition should be faster. The Tongass National Forest makes up most of Southeast Alaska (Courtesy U.S. Forest Service)On the timber industry side, Owen Graham of the Alaska Forest Association said the transition needs to slow down.“We’ve always agreed that there needs to be a transition, but we wanted the trees to reach maturity, which is 30 years in the future,” Graham said. “If they cut the trees now, over the next 10-15 years, then they’ll be too small to be properly sawn in the sawmills, and they’ll just end up being exported to China.”Graham said that the old-growth harvest planned during the transition isn’t adequate to maintain the few remaining sawmills. He added that a full inventory of young growth trees is needed before formalizing the amendment.“To do this transition right now is purely politics and all the rubbish that people are making up that it’ll work; it’s all rubbish,” Graham said. “They know perfectly well that it won’t work and they don’t care.”Dominick DellaSala, though, said it has worked in his state. He’s a scientist with the Geos Institute in Ashland, Ore., and also is unhappy with the draft Record of Decision. But his complaint is that the proposed transition is too slow, and will not do enough to combat climate change.“I think the Forest Service is missing an opportunity here because they’re basing (their decision) on old-school forestry and antiquated log processing techniques,” DellaSala said.Remains of a Tongass clear-cut and logging road north of Ketchikan. (Ed Schoenfeld, CoastAlaska)DellaSala, who advocates for a transition within five years, said there are new technologies that will allow mills to operate profitably with young-growth trees. He said Good Faith Lumber on Prince of Wales Island tested that equipment, and it worked, which shows mills that are willing to adapt can survive a transition. The Tongass plan amendment has been in the works for a few years, ever since Secretary of Agriculture Tom Visack directed the Forest Service to transition to young growth. Part of that process was the formation of the Tongass Advisory Committee, or TAC: a group of 15 representatives of Southeast conservation, tribal and timber industry groups.Andrew Thoms of the Sitka Conservation Society was one of the TAC members, representing environmental interests.“As a conservationist, I’d love to see the Forest Service get out of old growth right now, but our involvement in the advisory committee really followed this ethic of trying to come up with a collaborative solution and make Tongass management work for all the stakeholder groups,” Thoms said.Thoms said Alternative 5 protects high-value habitat and provides a road-map for a full transition to young growth. He added that dissatisfaction on the part of some timber industry representatives and some conservation groups indicates that the decision is a true compromise.Earl Stewart, Tongass Forest Supervisor. (KRBD file photo)There has been some concern by Alaska’s congressional delegation that the amendment is moving forward before a complete inventory of young growth is complete, and there is pending legislation to delay the transition. But Tongass Forest Supervisor Stewart said that isn’t an impediment. He said the Forest Service considered hundreds of thousands of comments on the issue, along with the TAC recommendations and input from scientists.“We believe we have enough information at this time to go forward with the forest plan amendment, yet concurrently we will continue with the inventory for more on-the-ground decisions,” Stewart said. And if that inventory shows there isn’t adequate young growth to support the industry, Stewart said there is flexibility within the Tongass Land Management Plan to evolve. You can read the draft Final Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision here. The link also provides information on how to comment.A final Record of Decision is expected by the end of the year. read more

Alaska Air Group on Wednesday announced that it has completed the acquisition of Virgin America in a $2.6 billion deal, eight days after the US Justice Department gave its approval for the merger. This will make Alaska Air the fifth largest domestic carrier in the United States. Even though operations of the two airlines will not be combined anytime soon, travellers will be able to purchase Virgin America flight tickets on the Alaska Airlines website and vice-versa, starting from Monday, Los Angeles Times reported.Alaska Air will focus on becoming the dominant airline in the West Coast. Both the airlines together have a fleet size of 286 aircraft and 18,800 employees. Brad Tilden, the CEO of the Seattle-based Alaska Air, said it has been a long time since the airline won the bidding war against rival JetBlue Airways Corp. This acquisition gives Alaska a readymade market network in California, which generates double the number of passengers when compared to markets in the state of Alaska and Washington, Wall Street Journal reported. Pending decisions Some decisions are yet to be made, including the decision on the Virgin brand and whether to retain the Virgin Airline’s Airbus A320 fleet (since Alaska Air is an all-Boeing fleet), Tilden told the WSJ. Decisions regarding the brand will be taken over the next few months but those regarding the fleet could take another year or so. New roles Post the merger, Alaska Air will continue to be based in Seattle. Ben Minicucci, the COO of Alaska Airlines, will take on the additional role of the CEO of Virgin America. Peter Hunt, who until now was the COO of Virgin, will become president of the unit. These new appointments will remain in place until the two carriers get a single operating permit from the US Federal Aviation Administration. Competition The combined operations of Alaska Air and Virgin America control only six percent of the US domestic market. Four other airlines — American, United, Delta and Southwest — enjoy a control of over 80 percent market share.Virgin America has a reputation for popular on-board amenities, while Alaska Airlines is known to be a no-frills flier with reliable on-time service. read more
If you’ve read my Android coverage before, you know I can’t stand that Google and its hardware and carrier partners still haven’t figured out a way to provide timely updates on phones after you buy them. In many cases, Android users never get to try the latest and greatest versions of Android because the operating system has become so fragmented over the years. That’s why I love Google’s Nexus program, which makes sure devices always have the newest Android features without having to jump through any hoops from carriers or third-party manufacturers. And even though Nexus phones have never been blockbuster devices with consumers, each new generation has consistently been better than the last. They easily hold their own against the most popular smartphones out there. That holds true with this year’s flagship phone from Google, the Nexus 4, which was built by LG and will go on sale November 13 for a very reasonable $299 for the unlocked version. (T-Mobile will also sell the Nexus 4 for $199.99 with a two-year contract.)Save for one glaring flaw that can affect many users, the Nexus 4 might be one of the best Android phones you can buy.Using it. The Nexus 4 runs the latest version of Android called Jelly Bean. Since its debut in July, Jelly Bean has been tweaked with a few clever and useful new features that add a nice overall polish to the operating system. The most noticeable new feature in Jelly Bean is a drop-down settings menu that lets you adjust basic functions like airplane mode, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Many third-party manufacturers have already added similar control panels to their Android phones, but it’s nice to see it in the clean version of Android. Plus, Google’s layout is a lot better and more functional than anything I’ve seen Samsung, HTC, or the rest come up with. It’s also worth mentioning the new camera modes. The Nexus 4 hardware takes great photos, even in dim light, but I’m really impressed with what Google did on the software side. The camera app’s interface is much easier to use now, with a wheel of shooting options (image size, flash, HDR, etc.) that hovers in front of the image you’re about to take. My favorite option is the new panoramic mode that lets you take a spherical 360-degree shot of your surroundings.Hardware and design. At first, the Nexus 4 looks and feels thick and blocky, but when placed on a flat surface next to the iPhone 5, it’s only a hair thicker. That’s because LG opted to design the phone with sharp angles on the sides instead of smooth curves. It’s as if the Nexus 4 was chiseled out of a larger piece of metal or glass. The result is a sturdy and well-designed phone. Unlike Samsung’s attempt at a Nexus phone last year, LG’s Nexus 4 isn’t covered in low-quality plastic. It’s solid as a brick, yet light as a feather. My only complaint with the design is the glass cover on the back. LG added an odd glittery finish to it, so the phone sparkles in the light as if someone took a bedazzler to it. Also, the back cover scratches easily. The big problem. As good as the Nexus 4 might be, it can’t connect to LTE data networks, the fastest wireless standard available. There’s no polite way to say this: Google screwed up here. Instead of working with carriers and making a phone that best serves its customers, Google took the easy way out and skipped LTE in the Nexus 4 so it could sell it unlocked from its own website.Today, LTE is standard in top-tier smartphones, making it difficult to mention the Nexus 4 in the same breath as the iPhone 5 or Galaxy S III. LTE isn’t available in a lot of places, but for those who care about getting the best data connection possible, this is going to be a deal-breaker.Should you buy it? If you’re a T-Mobile customer, the Nexus 4 is probably the best phone you can buy on the carrier at the moment. Everyone else will have to consider the unlocked version, which will only run on GSM networks like AT&T.But the lack of LTE support really puts a damper on an otherwise incredible device. If you think you can live without the fastest possible data speeds, then the Nexus 4 is a great deal at $299. Otherwise, you’re going to be really annoyed paying for a phone that can’t keep up with the competition. Republicans believe that NSF has been lax in this regard and the bill requires the agency to “correct” any problems identified by an independent audit of a project’s expected cost before starting construction That language could seriously delay new projects say NSF officials who add that the bill also contains rules about the use of contingency funds that are at odds with existing federal policies Within DOE’s Office of Science the bill’s impact would be limited to two of the office’s six research programs It would move more than $60 million from biological and environmental research into fusion research That money would presumably come out of DOE climate change efforts as the bill would require DOE to eliminate any climate research deemed to overlap with what other federal agencies are doing When it comes to DOE’s applied research efforts however the new COMPETES act takes out a hatchet It calls for cutting spending on DOE’s energy efficiency and renewable energy (EERE) program by 37% from its current level to $12 billion in 2016 In contrast the White House has requested a 42% boost to $27 billion Similarly it would slash the budget for ARPA-E devoted to translating the best results from basic research to budding energy technologies by 50% to $140 million rather than increase it by the 16% the administration has sought The House bill also zeros out numerous smaller applied research projects such as DOE’s next generation lighting initiative building standards program and efforts to find additional uses for electric-car batteries Those changes are in line with the argument by many Republicans that private industry not the federal government should pick up the tab for translating the most-promising basic research into commercial technologies says Michael Lubell a lobbyist with the American Physical Society (APS) in Washington DC But that assumption is unrealistic he says A 2008 APS study showed “that some federal money had to be provided because nobody else would do it” he notes Smith and his Republican colleagues do back government support for early-stage technologies outside the energy arena Last December in the final 2015 spending bill for all federal agencies Smith championed a network of manufacturing innovation research centers to be run by the National Institute of Standards and Technology that would tap money now going to DOE’s EERE The original plan called for spending $250 million over a decade on several new centers But the COMPETES reauthorization would speed up that timetable making $150 million of the total available over the next 3 years Research funding levels aren’t all that troubles Lubell and other science advocates The bill also proclaims that “the results of any research development demonstration or commercial application projects or activities of the [Energy] Department may not be used for regulatory assessments or determinations by Federal regulatory authorities” That clause although it appears within a section on fossil energy research and development would prevent the federal government from using any of the DOE research it paid for to inform policy “That’s absolutely bizarre” Lubell says Democrats are expected to offer a raft of amendments at today’s markup Although few if any are likely to pass science advocates are hoping that the Obama administration will object to enough of the bill’s provisions to reject anything that manages to clear both houses of Congress “At this point this White House is poised to veto anything that threatens the president’s priorities” Lubell says “I don’t really think there’s a snowball’s chance in hell of getting the president’s signature on it”Spoilers for Logan ahead The newest X-Men movie features a pint-sized pugilist Her name is X-23people call her Lauraand she’s Wolverine’s mini-me claws and all She slaughters men many times her size with help from the two claws that protrude from her hands (one less than Logan’s three) and one that protrudes from each of her feet Logan out March 3 might be Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine but X-23 could be the future of the X-Men franchise Here’s what you need to know Wolverine’s DNA was used to create her In Logan X-23 is basically a clone of Logan Remember Colonel Stryker the evil guy in the Weapon X lab who put adamantium on Wolverine’s skeleton in X-Men Origins: Wolverine turning him into a super solider Probably not since that movie wasn’t very good Well anyway Stryker’s son has carried on his legacy in 2029 by building an army of super-powered children using the DNA left over from mutants including that of Logan (aka Wolverine) Last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse hinted at this coming development In that movie a young Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) releases Wolverine from the Weapon X facility (How he got there in the first place is a mystery since in 2014’s Days of Future Past the X-Men travel through time and rewrite history In the new universe Wolverine is kidnapped by a person who looks to be Stryker but is revealed to actually be Mystique in disguise suggesting she’s going to save him from Weapon X So how he wound up at Weapon X with adamantium claws despite Mystique’s efforts is unclear) In an Apocalypse end-credits scene a mysterious man carrying an Essex Corp briefcase collects some of Wolverine’s blood from Weapon X MORE How Logan Fits Into the X-Men Timeline It’s Essex then that creates the mutant children in an illegal facility in Mexico However the project is shut down after Essex learns they cannot control the kids who are annoyingly growing consciences Some nurses help the children escape and Laura finds her way to Logan Here’s X-23’s origin story in the comics In the comic books Weapon X tries to replicate what was done to Wolverine but failed A scientist named Sarah Kinney eventually begins using Wolverine’s DNA to try to create a clone She fails 22 times but eventually uses the last of the DNA to create a female version: x-23 (She also has to carry the baby because her boss is really mean) In most of the comics X-23 fights as a teenager or young adult The character is aged down in the movie MORE Review: Wolverine Reaches the Last Chapter in Grim Overbearing Logan She has other similarities besides the claws Like Logan Laura has a predilection for rage She also seems to have a quick-healing ability like her “dad” recovering as soon as she’s shot or stabbed She could be crucial in future X-Men films Okay let’s talk about the end of Logan Wolverine is almost certainly dead Turns out he was already aging thanks to the adamantium in his body that was poisoning him all along It would have done him in eventually so fighting a souped-up new version of Wolverine only accelerated the process In Logan we see Wolverine’s last breath and a funeral So if there are going to be more Wolverine films they will almost certainly focus on Laura At the end we see her wandering off with her fellow young mutants to a sanctuary Could the franchise be setting up an all-new X-Men crew led by Laura as the new Wolverine MORE See How Marvel’s Wolverine Has Evolved Over The Years That is very similar to what happens in the comics In a 2014 series Logan dies and Laura becomes the one and only Wolverine in the books She wears her own version of the classic yellow costume and even gets a pet Wolverine named Jonathan which would be pretty great to see onscreen That said we may not have seen the last of Hugh Jackman in the X-Men movies Jackman has said that he’s closing the chapter on this character after 17 years but that doesn’t necessarily preclude cameos in the X-Men prequels Logan takes place in 2029 The current X-Men films take place in the 1970s so he could easily show up in those moviesespecially since he doesn’t really age There’s also the whole alternate universe issue that Days of Future Past introduced which means that Wolverine could still be alive and well in an alternate timeline Write to Eliana Dockterman at elianadockterman@timecomAmazon is planning to launch a music streaming service specifically for its Echo connected speaker device Recode reports The service will reportedly cost $4 or $5 a month about half the price of rivals like Apple Music and Spotify’s paid offerings (Those services work across a range of devices from smartphones to PCs) Amazon is also said to be preparing a separate $10 service comparable that will work on any device Both of Amazon’s new streaming options are expected to launch in September though Recode reports the company has not yet finalized deals with music labels and publishers Amazon’s line of Echo products include the $17999 Echo the $11499 Amazon Tap and the $8999 Echo Dot All three devices are smart speakers powered by Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant Users can get answers to basic questions (“Alexa what’s the weather going to be like tomorrow”) and interact with apps (“Alexa call me an Uber”) in addition to playing music The report didn’t specify whether Amazon’s cheaper music service would be available on all three devices or just the standard $17999 Echo A $5 Echo-only streaming service would mark a different approach than that of Amazon’s rivals which tend to focus on streaming from smartphones It isn’t clear what Amazon’s new streaming service would mean for Apple Music or Spotify when it comes to Echo compatibility (Spotify is currently available on the Echo Apple Music takes a bit of a workaround) Amazon’s $1099/month Prime subscription fee also includes a streaming service called Prime Music but it only offers “more than a million” songs compared to the near 30 million tunes found on Apple Music and Spotify Amazon’s new services might boast a bigger library
